White Ligers have Light Brown Fur

The white ligers have the light brown colored fur rather than having the white one. Furthermore; the white ligers as the name suggests are not exactly white in appearance like the white ligers and the white lions. The white ligers are born to the male white lion and the female white tigress. White ligers are extremely rare and there are only four white ligers in the world right now. However; apparently it looks as if the the fur color of the white ligers is a bit lighter than the fur color of the normal ligers whose fur color is tawny brown color (like lions and lionesses).

White ligers are not exactly white but they do have a unique light-brown colored fur which is also lighter than the normal fur coloring of the ligers.

But are these white ligers really lighter and light brown in color as compared to the tawny brown colored ligers? This article tends to analyze the true color of the white ligers at the different phases of their lives i.e., birth, juvenile stage and finally as the mature ligers and compares it with the ligers born to the non-white parents.

White Ligers have light brown colored fur.

Let's analyze the fur color of the white ligers from the time of their births. The world's first white ligers were in 2013 at the Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina, USA. At the time of their birth, their fur color was white with brown colored stripes on their fur. However; the color of these newborn white liger cubs was not as white as the newborn white tiger or lion cubs.

Right from the birth the white liger cubs have a very unique fur color which is different and lighter than the fur color of the normally born liger cubs. The normally born liger cubs have tawny brown colored fur.

But the color of these white liger cubs was much lighter than the normally born ligers which have a pale brown colored fur. Normally; the new born liger cubs do not have this much lighter fur as the white liger cubs displayed at the time of their birth. Therefore; right from the birth the white liger cubs have a unique color of their furs which is even lighter than the fur color of the normally born liger cubs.

White Ligers at birth had light brown or creamish color.
At the time of the birth in 2013, the white ligers had the light brown or creamish (offwhite) color which is lighter than the non-white ligers. Photo courtesy of

The most interesting phase to analyze the color of these white ligers is their juvenile period. This phase starts from the age of 1 to 3 years. During this phase; these white liger cubs still display a light brown colored fur while they didn't look white in their appearance (except their under-belly and chest etc. which are white in most of the big cat cases).

At the juvenile stage of their lives, the white ligers possess the light-brown colored fur which slightly varies from all in all white appearance. However; their light brown colored fur during their juvenile period still remains lighter than the fur color of the normal ligers.

Even in this phase of their lives, the light brown colored fur still remains lighter and unchanged for the white liger cubs. This also means that the white ligers maintain the same lighter brown colored fur even after couple of years as well.

White Ligers have light brown colored fur during the juvenile phase of their lives.
The white ligers display the same (unique) light brown colored fur even when they become the juvenile ligers. Such observations strong suggest that their fur color is unique. Photo courtesy of

Finally; at the mature age (4 years and onward) these white ligers still maintain their light brown colored fur. Their appearance does not show any sign of the white fur on their body. However; their fur color still remains unique and it pretty much varies from the normal fur coloring of the ligers i.e., pale brown or a lion fur color.

Even at the age of maturity (4 Years and Onwards); the white ligers still maintain the same light brown colored fur. Their fur is so light that their stripes are not easily visible.

Furthermore; the stripes on the fur of the white ligers are so dim that they remain less dominant. Therefore; the white ligers even at the age of the maturity not only have unique light-brown colored fur but also very light colored stripes on their fur.

White Ligers maintain light brown colored fur even when they get fully grown.
A fully grown white liger will also possess the light brown (off-white) colored fur. Therefore; this unique light-brown colored fur remains permanent part of the white ligers for their entire life. Photo courtesy of

Based upon this special characteristic of the white ligers i.e., to have light brown fur on their bodies, they can also be classified as the specific type of the ligers (white ligers) within the liger family. Apart from white ligers, the other three types of ligers which have already been classified include the maned ligers (male ligers with manes), the maneless ligers (male ligers without manes) and the tiger lookalike ligers (Ligers looking like tigers).

White ligers are the fourth addition to the already classified 3 type of ligers i.e., the maned ligers, the maneless ligers and the tiger lookalike tigers. So far; only one birth and the litter of four white liger cubs have been recorded.

White ligers are the latest addition to the new types of the ligers within the hybrid big cat family. Furthermore; they are rarest of all the big cats because so far only one birth has been recorded and only four of them exist today.

White Ligers are classified as the specific type of the ligers.
Based upon their fur color (Light brown), the white ligers are also classified as the specific type of the ligers amongst the 3 other type of the ligers. Photo courtesy of

Lastly; what about the size of the white ligers? In the big cat family, especially for the white tigers it is believed that they grow bigger and faster than the orange furred tigers. Will same be true about the white ligers as well and will they be bigger than the pale brown furred ligers? Do remember the fact that the ligers are already the biggest of all the big cats in the world and white ligers may come up as the biggest of all the big ligers in the world.

Just like the white tigers, who have the potential to outgrow the orange furred tiger; in the same way the white ligers can possibly outgrow the pale brown furred ligers. A grown up white liger is almost 12 feet long already which is the longest of all the ligers in the world.

We did witness one of the grown up white liger cub recently and his size is super huge. According to his owner Dr. Bhagavan Antle, Odin the white liger is almost 12 feet long and much taller than his previous Hercules the liger. Therefore; white ligers may possibly outgrow the previously biggest ligers including the Hercules the liger as well.

White Liger named Apollo weighs more than 900 pounds in weight.
