The biggest lion that has ever recorded and documented is around 375 Kg (827 Pounds) in weight. This lion was witnessed in captivity at Ireland's Dublin Zoo in 1959. This lion was believed to be more than 10 feet long and looked very huge. A weight of 375 Kg is very huge for a lion and in the wild where the food is scarcely available lions do not reach this much amount of weight.
The biggest lion ever recorded weighed 827 pounds. This lion was almost 10 feet long in length.
However; an abnormality (like in humans) can also possibly increase the lion to this amount of 375 Kg. Some online sources also claimed that the lion in Dublin Zoo which had this 375 Kg of weight had a disorder and because of that it continued to increase its weight. Apart; from that there are no further reports, observations and even photographs of this lion from the Dublin Zoo.
Recently; there have been reports of lions even as big as 900 pounds as well on youtube. At first instance they look as if they are some kind of hybrids i.e., ligers. A Youtube video confirms the presence of at least two such lions in which their owner states them to have almost 900 to 1000 pounds of weight.
On Youtube a pair of castrated male lions weighing 900 Pounds is also reported but according to many observers they were most probably ligers not lions.
Unlike a normal lion these lions didn't have any mane around their neck and according to the presenter of the video; both the lions were castrated at the time of birth. So castration would have been a key factor here for these lions to grow up so much bigger and huge. If we accept the validity of this video then both of these lions will most probably be the biggest lions ever recorded in the world.
However; lions weighing more than 300 Kg of weight have also been witnessed within the wild as well. In 1936; a male lion was shot in South Africa's Transvaal area and it weighed 313 Kg (690 Pounds) which is very unusual for a lion; especially in the wild. This is also the highest recorded weight for any lion in the wild.
The biggest lion in the wild weighed around 690 Pounds.
Reportedly; it was a man-eating lion and because of its huge weight the lion found it very convenient to start preying on the humans in the local area. Therefore; there was no option but to kill the lion. A well-known big cat hunter named as Lennox Anderson killed that lion in 1936. The time frame of this event is long ago and it was recorded in the 20th century. Moreover; none of the modern day estimates of the biggest lion in the wild are as much closer to 313 Kg in weight.
In 2014; a male lion named as Mufasa was reported to weigh around 635 pounds. According to the reports Mufasa lived in some animal sanctuary in Montana, USA. The lion also featured within ABC News; when it traveled from Montana to Eden Prairie, Minnesota to participate in some Easter show. However; this male lion has never got any recognition of being the biggest lion in the world by anyone but we still believe this lion is one of the biggest ones in the world.
In 2014; a male lion named as Mufasa weighed 635 pounds at Montana, USA.
The media also recognized this lion as one of the biggest ones in the current era. In fact there is no governing body in the world which measures the biggest lion on yearly basis around the world. Hercules the liger has appeared twice within Guinness Book of World Records in 2006 and 2013. So they did measure occasionally the biggest of the big cats but this measurement and tracking is general and not specific to the lions.
However; in the wild it is undesirable for a lion to have a huge weight of more than 600 pounds. In the wild there is a common saying that only the fittest will survive, therefore; any deviation from the normal weight will always threaten survival. A big lion of more than 600 pounds of weight will be slow, will be lack hunting skills and will not be able to survive on its own. The lions of Africa survive on the basis of coalition of three of more male lions within the pride rather than a single big lion guarding the whole pride and making the survival possible.
Normally a lion weighs in between 200 Kg (441 Pounds) to 240 Kg (529 Pounds) at maximum. This weight is ideal for any lion to live and survive within African environment. The average length of an African lion is in between 8 to 9 feet long while their shoulder length is almost 36 inches (3 Feet) from the ground surface. Such an overall size is best for the lion to become an ultimate predator at the African plains and maintain its dominance over other animals. Remember; too much bigger size may prove out to be counter-productive for the lions considering the conditions of African Savannah.
